His Excellency, Lim JUAY JIN, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Nigeria was recently a guest at the research laboratory facility of Contec Agro in Maitama, Abuja, where he expressed optimism that Nigeria could turn its economic fortunes for the best using agriculture as alternative tool.
The High Commissioner, who visited in company of his wife, expressed pleasant surprise at the level of efforts being mustered and deployed by Contec Agro towards achieving food sufficiency in Nigeria.
In his opinion, Nigeria’s diversification agenda could be fast-tracked if it is complimented by private sector led agro initiatives.
He particularly expressed delight at the progress made by the firm through researches and development of bio-fertilizer, tissue culturing of commonly consumed and produced crops as well as other innovations that are being developed at the firm’s food production through improved yields through organic farming in Nigeria.
Ina related development, the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb Jens-Petter Kjemprud, recently hinted that there were indications that Nigeria would soon regain her economic glory. He stated this at the Nigerian-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce’s First Quarterly Business Roundtable in Lagos. Amb. Petter stated that it was imperative to Nigerians to see that Nigeria, like other countries of the world, had from past experiences been in such situations, and would soon regain her balance. ‘’We all can see that Nigeria is currently faced with some sort of economic down-town, but we strongly believe the country will soon bounce out of its present economic problems.’’
‘’We have all been a witness to such time in the past, when Nigerian economy had its ups and downs, and would always bounce back. So, this time should not be an exception. This is why we will continue to be convincing more Norwegians investors and companies to be aware that Nigeria’s economy will soon bounce back,’’ he said.
Amb Petter said that his government’s cooperation with Nigeria had been on a good note in areas such as fisheries, shipping and off-shore oil sector.
In his own remark, Mr. Segun Awolowo, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) said that Nigeria was currently on a ‘’Zero Oil’’ plan and export promotion. He noted that Nigeria’s problem had been its refusal to promote exportation of products other than crude oil.
