Farmers In Agribusiness: NALDA Set To Launch ‘Grow Your Farm’ Project In Nigeria
The issue of ever rising food prices in Nigeria has become a thing of serious worry for the government and its agencies. All over the country reports show that food prices are soaring beyond the ordinary man’s power in the country.
In response to this, The National Agricultural Land Development Authority, (NALDA), has expressed its readiness to launch the ‘Grow Your Farm’ project to boost food security and create more agricultural jobs in the value chain.
This information was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Authority, Prince Paul Ikonne, during a courtesy visit by the Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum, at the authority’s headquarters in Abuja.
Prince Ikonne said that the agency is working hard towards adding value to the lives of young Nigerians as they are priceless assets Nigeria has. That is the reason they set up the ‘Grow Your Farm’ project.
According to the Executive Secretary, the programme is to encourage every household to start growing food within their environment using flower pots, they will be called ‘Vegetable Pots”, and NALDA will support them with necessary materials as the way to get every Nigerian to come on board to provide food for the nation.
He said that the President has approved it and also is giving the Authority about 30, 000 soil Doctors and extension service providers. The training according to him will take off on March 1st, 2021 in Borno State Nigeria.
Mr. Ikonne revealed that Borno State Governor has provided the list of about 1,000 graduates for his own state, and he has also made all necessary contributions towards achieving the success of the programme in his state.
He also revealed that the agency will be distributing bags, soil and seed for them to do that, so that every household will use every available space to grow what they eat. The president has recently said that we must produce what we eat; NALDA has made it its watchword.
The Executive Secretary also made it known that NALDA and the Borno State Government are on top of discussion on a fish farming programme that will engage about 2,400 young people in the state. The government has already submitted the list and provided farm locations.
He disclosed that contractors are already at the site and in the ten locations for the project.
From the foregoing you can see that the Borno State Governor has keyed into Mr. President’s initiative of achieving food security for the state and nation in general.
It is quite encouraging to see such ground breaking opportunities springing out from such a state facing tough challenges. The governor is making it easier for NALDA to function and for farmers too to be at home while farming, according to Mr. Ikonne.
On machinery, equipment and processing plants, he said “They have processing mills, so for us, we have an understanding with the Borno State Government to increase the capacity of their feed processing mill in Borno State”.
“They are producing bags for NALDA to use in packaging our finished products”.
‘So you can see that we h
ave something like an entire Agricultural value chain understanding with the government and people of Borno State through the Governor”.
What a Governor, and the willingness of an entire state to chase poverty away from their state. Just imagine if 20,000 youths will be engaged in this agricultural chain fully supported by both the state government and the Federal Government through NALDA.
Like we said earlier at the beginning of the article, there is not denying the fact that the Federal Government has set machineries in motion to rescue this Nation from the shackles of poverty.
Other countries without half of the opportunities available to us are enjoying the goodies of agriculture far more than the people of this country.
Please as a member of this forum; try to inform your state government about these opportunities if they are not yet aware.
