IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY NEEDED TO MAKE OUR AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY COMPETITIVE
There is a need for improved technology and mechanized farming that would fast track agricultural development in the country. Nigeria is a country with a notable population which can be translated into a big market for agricultural growth and large export industry.
We have to embrace mechanization of agricultural operations in the country in order to make the industry competitive.
Nigerians have to eat and for us to eat, we have to mechanize agricultural production and for us to mechanize, it means engineers have to be involved to fabricate all the machines that will mechanize all the operations.
It is disheartening that manual labour is still used to winnow maize, rice and other food items when a thresher can be used to thresh the rice instead of using manual labour to blow it through the air.
Using crude or manual food processing methods would make the products less competitive in the market where competing food items were processed with agricultural technology. The government and capable private sectors should give farmers and stakeholders the necessary support as there are machines that could perform all the operations easily and faster.
Aside the need for mechanized farming and improved technology, skillful manpower is as well required. Our youths should be encouraged and given a platform for learning skills that would aid the technological development of the agricultural industry because of the energy involved. We have to encourage the young ones to acquire technological skills.
This is an awakening call on the government, youths, farmers, potential investors, stakeholders to work towards achieving a well improved technology for improved agriculture, in order to better the lot of the nation.
