Food Security: It Is Time To Embrace Agri-Business, Lagos State Government Urges Citizens
The Lagos State Government has reiterated the need for engaging in agricultural business to the citizens in order to bridge the food gap currently existing in the state. There is no gainsaying the fact that there is an acute shortage of food items in Lagos State and Nigeria in general. Lagos State Government has put many policies in place to tackle food insecurity in the state. But are Lagosians utilizing these opportunities?
The population of Lagos is growing daily and there is an urgent need for the populace to key into agricultural policies of the state to feed the teeming population. The government is ready to support willing agro-businessmen and women in Lagos.
The state government also commended Lagosians for standing strongly especially during the period of Covid-19 lockdown without allowing the food chain to be broken then. All these were said by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya at the December Edition of the Eko City Farmers’ fair and farmers’ Appreciation Day, at the Ndubuisi Kanu Park, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos state.
Ms. Olusanya explained that the citizens need to embrace agribusiness due to the harsh economic realities we are facing today due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. Lagosians are aware that this is one of the pillars of the Theme of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration.
There is no better time to engage in agribusiness in Nigeria and Lagos state in particular due to its high population. There is no quantity of agricultural products brought into Lagos that will satisfy the population. Lagos has a ready population that will take whatever quantity of goods produced.
According to the amiable commissioner, this year 2020 has presented us with peculiar circumstances due to the Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the entire world. Lagos being the economic capital of Nigeria is heavily affected but the farmers stood with the government to fight the scourge to a standstill. Without farmers in the country today, Nigeria in these terrible periods will not survive.
Our farmers saw us through when the world thought that we will not have access to food during this pandemic, but surprisingly our amiable farmers came to our rescue. Kudos will go to them many times. There was extreme difficulty in procuring food items which led to delays but the farmers saw us through. What a trying time.
Lagos State in Nigeria is no doubt the 21st Century Economy, the commissioner said; we cannot stop appreciating the enormous contributions of our dear farmers. The government of Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not relent in praising you for your steadfastness in solving the food shortage problem that was almost staring us in the face.
The commissioner reminded the people that the Eko City Farmers’ Fair was established and intended to be a melting point for farmers to be able to sell directly to the public and consumers from the farm to enable them enjoy farm fresh foods at reasonable prices while shopping in a relaxed atmosphere.
Nigerian farmers have gone through very tough and extreme challenging circumstances unimaginable in the history of this country. There is no aspect of farming that had not been battered by the effects of this pandemic.
Are we going to talk about the poultry farmers who have been hit beyond what a human being can handle and they are still toiling providing us with meat and eggs. The feed millers are facing one of the greatest risks to their existence in this period. The high cost of feed resulting from the exportation of maize and soya bean meal is about to wipe out the feed mill companies and even the poultry industry.
Dr. Yakub Bashorun, emerged as the best farmer of the year, Mr. Samuel Omitunde emerged as the most promising farmer of the year and Mrs. Sola Ogunleye emerged as the best woman in agriculture in the year 2020. Congratulations from us to all of you the winners.
