The Rockefeller Foundation, through its Pyxera Global Yield-wise Nigeria Project, says it will train more than 27,000 tomato farmers from Jigawa, Kano and Katsina states, registered in its database. While revealing this at a stakeholders meeting in Kano, the Project Director of the initiative, Lekan Tobe, said that the project was aimed at reducing post-harvest loss for tomato in the country. Mr. Tobe who said that the registered farmers would be trained on better agronomic practices and post-harvest management, said they would also be linked to prospective buyers and processors. The Project Director stressed that the move was to introduce an improved and better agricultural practice for better produces. “We also want to ensure there is coordination among stakeholders in the value chain,” Tobe said. Tobe added that the project had introduced 16 affordable technologies to preserve the tomatoes before being transported to markets. In his remarks, Mr. Sani Danladi-Yadakwari, the Secretary-General of the Tomato Growers Association of Nigeria, advised farmers to adopt the use of the newly introduced plastic crates for transporting commodities to other parts of the country.
