A retired agricultural expert has said the Growth Enhancement Support is key to the success of the country's agricultural transformation. The scheme was a turning point in the implementation of the Federal Government's agricultural transformation agenda.
Its was an initiative of the Federal Government some years back to address the challenges of past systems of input distribution and subsidy administration in the agricultural sector.
He said federal and state governments should subsidise input supplied to farmers by 50 per cent.
"Under the scheme, the government provides support directly to registered small scale farmers through the provision of subsidised seeds and fertiliser
"The input supplied to the farmers are subsidised at by the federal and state governments where both contribute some percentage each while the former pays the remaining ".
More than 65 percent of nigeria small holder farmers would be benefiting in the scheme.
The expert said the Agriculture ministry had years back conducted successful field trials of the scheme in some states.
"The Ministry of Agriculture has conducted field trials of the scheme with remarkable success.
"From the results, the scheme will certainly enhance access to agro-inputs, reduce government's cost of procuring and distributing inputs as well as ensure that the support gets to the intended beneficiaries.
"Overall, the scheme is expected to bring about increase in productivity and household income, thereby reducing poverty in our rural communities where majority of the resource constraint farmers reside."
He advice farmers not to eat the seeds given to them because they had been processed with chemicals.
On his part, the Rivers State Governor said the state would be part of the growth enhancement support scheme for farmers in the state.
He said the state government had introduced a new policy to tackle crime with jobs provision.
"The government has decided that we are going to change direction from henceforth.
"We are no longer going to fight crime with arms. We are no longer going to fight crime with guns," he added.
"We intend to fight crime from now to the end of our administration, we intend to fight crimes with jobs. "That simply means, we provide job for you and we believe that 80 per cent of the people who found themselves in the creek, who are criminals, if they have opportunity to do something, certainly, they will not be where they are."
A farmer, Mr. Emmanuel Otom said he would ensure that his farmers cooperative group key into the new growth enhancement support scheme.
