Agric Subsidy: Farmers Fault Federal Government Of Nigeria (FGN), Government Claims Six Million Operators Registered
The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN) on 14th of July, 2021 clashed over the claim by the Federal Government on the registration of Nigerian farmers.
We brought you an article some time ago about the plan of the government of Nigeria to register farmers to enable it give subsidies to the farmers. The government is now saying that it has registered about six million of Nigerian Farmers while the umbrella of the farmers in Nigeria (AFAN) is saying otherwise.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Agriculture, Andrew Kwasari, disclosed that more than six million farmers had been registered by the Federal Government for the purpose of giving them subsidy.
But the National President of AFAN, Kabir Ibrahim said that the association was not aware of the programme being carried out in the country. He was arguing that the government should not claim that it has spent billions of naira on capturing data of farmers in the country.
Many associations, including cotton growers claimed that they were not aware or involved in the exercise.
On June 17th 2021, The Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, said during the fourth meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Rural Development that government has created an online portal to register 10 million farmers in Nigeria.
He said that the exercise would capture the farmers’ biographies, geographical information of their farmlands, crops, and volumes of what they could produce.
He also said that the database will be a platform for the Federal Government interventions and put an end to various unscrupulous schemes and practices in the agricultural industry.
However, the National President of Association of Farmers in Nigeria denied the existence of such a programme. He said that they have not been registered, and that they are not part of what they are doing.
Also the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter, Chief Femi Oke, said that he was not aware of any registration or data capture exercise yet.
The Bauchi State Chairman of the Association, Mahmoud Yakubu, said that in his capacity as the Chairman of the Association in Bauchi state that he has not heard of it.
The Osun state chairman of the Association, Alhaji Sulaimon Araokanmi, said that the only registration farmers did in the state was for those who recorded losses during the ENDSARS protest and flooding of 2020.
He said that they have 52 commodities in the state and every commodity has a leader. He is the overall leader of all the farmers in the state, and that all commodities have representatives.
The same thing goes for the Chairman of the Cotton Farmers’ Association in the state, Sulaimon Akande, he said that their group was not aware of any registration by either the state of Federal Government.
But the Chairman of the Cross River State branch of the Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, Oliver Ntui, agreed that he has heard about the programme but that his association was not involved in the registration.
The Chairman of AFAN in Benue state, Aondongu Saaku, said that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development were in charge of the registration of farmers in the state.
He said that the registration was being done in conjunction with Benue State Rural Agricultural Development Agency.
The Director of Information in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Theodore Ogaziechi, said that the registration was being handled by the Presidency.
“The Special Assistant to the President on Agriculture is the person in charge of the project”, he said.
He said that over six million farmers have been registered despite denial by the associations.
