We are in the season where vegetables become scarce and relatively dear due to the dry season. Vegetables require water to germinate, grow, and fruit. Plant cells are made mostly of water. Vegetables take up nutrients through soil water.
Dry season is the period under which plants fail to mature because they lack enough water. Vegetables, during this time, may not grow rapidly but if some steps are taken, it will sure make a difference.
Whether you have a garden of vegetables for subsistence farming or commercial purpose, having your vegetables grow well and fast will sure make you smile.
Steps to take during dry season vegetable farming
- Do not allow weeds to grow in your garden. Weeds compete with vegetables and other plants for water, nutrients, and light. Handpick weeds when they are just 2 or 3 inches tall. Or lightly cultivate weeds exposing their roots to drying wind and sun. Never allow weeds to set seed in your garden and multiply.
- Add organic matter to your garden. Add aged compost and aged manure; the more the better. Add at least ¼ to ½ inch of compost to your garden. Organic matter will improve all soils and will help your soil retain water.
- Plant the seeds with a right planting distance to avoid competition among the crops.
After planting in dry season, a robust irrigation method is what ensures a successful farming system. As a result of the irrigation technology, the dry season farming can be capital intensive.
In the case of subsistence farming, you can water the plants adequately everyday, morning and evening even after they are mature for harvesting for your vegetables to survive.
- Harvest your crops on time. Take crops at their peak of growth and flavor. Don’t leave plants in garden too long, flavor will not be enhanced and crops will deteriorate.
These steps are necessary to enjoy your vegetables this season and get expected returns on your investment.
